About Samsara Sari:
Samsara means the cycle of rebirth in Sanskrit. This concept drives Samsara Sari - a brand that transforms pre-loved saris into an original and colorful collection of apparel, accessories and home products. Launched in 2019, Samsara Sari is a sustainable, slow fashion brand.
Namita Penugonda Reddy, the founder, grew up in Pennsylvania and worked as an architect in NYC for 15 years before starting her brand.
In 2010 she traveled with family in search of clothes for her wedding to a town in South India specialized in traditional marriage saris that are hand woven by artisans. Here she learned that the younger generation does not wear saris as much as the older one so weavers are going out of business. At this point she began to further appreciate the richness of the sari as an art form.
A few years ago, while going through her mom’s closet to find a sari to wear to a wedding, Namita found a closet full of beautiful saris that she had never seen. She would preserve a few of her mother’s special saris and wear them but she wanted to find a use for all the other gorgeous saris that she did not wear anymore. Realizing that this was not unique to her mother, she decided to pull the saris out of her closet and others to preserve a memory, a tradition, and an art form.
