About Girija

I am an artist with multiple professional identities including as an art therapist, educator, and researcher in healthcare and community settings. Instead of traditional canvases, I use elements of nature as both the theme and the base for my art. Natural materials (leaves, shells, tree bark, wildflowers) represent to me the transient beauty and anonymity of everyday lives as well as the paradoxically universal uniqueness of all beings. I call this series Nature canvas. The cockle shells used here are from the Gulf coast. Some of the pieces incorporate pressed hydrangea florets. They can be enjoyed as is in their natural colors and texture as well as with the painted parts within. They works can also be used as ring holders.
