The images are fascinating both for what they see as well as what they don’t. The ultra-long nature of the exposures allows them to record the movements of the sun as it traverses the sky each day, recording both its daily path as well as the change in its position in the sky over time. The nature of long exposures also removes from the images many of the mundane irritants of daily life–traffic, people, and all the temporary things that clutter up our space simply vanish from the recorded image. The resulting images often show vast empty spaces dominated by the mark of the sun on its daily journey across the sky.'

Dolores Poacelli
#73
Monoprint/Collage
Image size: 10" x 7.75"
Paper size: 17" x 14"

About Dolores Poacelli

"Angsting over starting a new series -thinking of isolation; thinking of the madness of the last three years; thinking of the insecurity of our future physically and politically. Wondering how to express doom in a way that uses intense colors and the power and simplicity of a single shape. After the first two pieces I realized that I was being influenced by one of my favorite painters Phillip Guston. He was a master of taking an extremely serious subject and expressing it in a cartoonish style - bringing us in with a pleasant color scheme and playful shapes and smacking us with reality. I entitled this series RUINS -the ruins created by climate change and denial. The pieces evolving by multi-layering with acrylic and oils building texture and expression. I use these media to create implied narrative landscapes. I take photographic elements and print-collage them together, attempting to authentically tell the stories and histories of abandoned architecture. As nature actively reclaims them, these structures stand resiliently as testaments to their history and serve as reminders of the legacies of the people who've left them behind. My work reflects on the ways that man-made architecture is eclipsed by nature, and often nature plays a direct part in the creation of a work of art. I often harvest plants (weeds) from my garden and use them in my work. I'm perpetually enamored by their biodiversity. I work in layers: first, a background painting of a sky-scape I've witnessed, followed by layers of photo screen prints that are developed from my photographic imagery. When I photograph a building, I see it as a design element, a character in the narrative, and the silkscreen is a way of making a mark, much like a paintbrush. In this way, I piece together multiple images in such a way that they unveil the story of a place."

Shop more work by Gillian Pokalo

Vivienne Varay
FlowerPetals
2020
Sterling silver and vitreous enamel
1.75" x 0.75" x 0.3"

About

Frost is a series of earrings made of sterling silver and vitreous enamel. I digitally appropriate art historical images with those from film and popular culture, juxtaposed with psychedelic and floral patterns and mix them all together. Francois Boucher and Gerhard Richter, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Gene Davis, Bridget Riley, Nicholas Krushenick and Jean-Antoine Watteau, among others - the rococo and abstraction, op art and pop art, anime and realism, and the psychedelic all come together, layered, spliced and distorted. I appreciate the Rococo for its extravagance and theatricality, as it appeals to my love of kitsch. Paintings, prints and sculptures, collaged with cakes, printed skate decks and fake fur create an extravagant hodge-podge of seemingly disparate imagery and materials that evoke the psychosexual.

Film imagery is another element important to my work. Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, and femme fatales, Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth...idealized much like the goddesses in Rococo painting.
