I use these media to create implied narrative landscapes. I take photographic elements and print-collage them together, attempting to authentically tell the stories and histories of abandoned architecture. As nature actively reclaims them, these structures stand resiliently as testaments to their history and serve as reminders of the legacies of the people who've left them behind. My work reflects on the ways that man-made architecture is eclipsed by nature, and often nature plays a direct part in the creation of a work of art. I often harvest plants (weeds) from my garden and use them in my work. I'm perpetually enamored by their biodiversity. I work in layers: first, a background painting of a sky-scape I've witnessed, followed by layers of photo screen prints that are developed from my photographic imagery. When I photograph a building, I see it as a design element, a character in the narrative, and the silkscreen is a way of making a mark, much like a paintbrush. In this way, I piece together multiple images in such a way that they unveil the story of a place."

Shop more work by Gillian Pokalo

Katie Baldwin
A Dream of Birds
Archival inkjet print
10" x 10"
(unframed)

Edition of 9

About Katie Baldwin

'Katie Baldwin is a bookbinder and printmaker who has traveled extensively as artist in residence, including Japan, Mexico, Cuba, and Poland. He was a master of taking an extremely serious subject and expressing it in a cartoonish style - bringing us in with a pleasant color scheme and playful shapes and smacking us with reality. I entitled this series RUINS -the ruins created by climate change and denial. The pieces evolving by multi-layering with acrylic and oils building texture and expression. Rebecca’s work deconstructs patterns and forms found in nature through an intuitive witnessing and an eidetic image-making that situates itself in the liminal space between abstraction and representation. She frequently incorporates visual data, such as maps and microscopic images, as well as found and foraged materials, into her work. Rebecca’s process is informed by research; developed in collaboration with community leaders, educators, and scientists; and grounded in contemplative practice. A longtime resident of Japan and student of Japanese art history, his work finds form between the imagery and philosophies of Japanese art and contemporary abstraction. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, he has shown his work throughout the United states and Japan and is included in numerous private collections. Andrew’s paintings are flattened abstract monuments - mountains, mounds, stelae, beasts and creatures. They are meditations on art history, color, mythology and the possibilities and impossibilities of life. Each is a mysterious object meant to reveal itself gradually and offer viewers moments of contemplative slowness.
